Goodbye to Glauco/ BRASIL

by Hamed Nabahat on Mar.14, 2010, under Cartoonists, News

Goodbye, Glauco:

 by Ana von Rebeur

We are terribly sad of communicating the violent death  of 53 years old Brazilian  cartoonist Glauco ( Glauco Villas Boas) , assasinated yesterday night in  an assault at his home in Sao Paolo together with 25  years old  son Raoni (25 años). He was assaulted previously, and he  was   negotiating  with the  criminals, when huis   son came and both were shot to death. Being a close friend of cartoonists  Angeli and Laerte , he was the godfather of the sons  of Angeli , and the founder of the Céu de Maria church , of which he is  neighbour and  where  he  was an acordion player.

he was born in Jandaia do Sul, began to publish his comic strips in ”Diário da Manhã”, at  Ribeirão Preto, in the  ´70s. He  was  awarded at the  Salón Internacional de Humor de Piracicaba in 1977 and  1978 .  From 1977 he began publishing at Folha de Sao Paulo and from  1985, he  was a parmanente cartoonists  in the  newspaper.Spome  of his  well known  characters are  Geraldão, Cacique Jaraguá, Nojinsk, Dona Marta, Zé do Apocalipse, Doy Jorge, Ficadinha, Netão and Edmar Bregman, among others.

In 2006, he published the  book “Política Zero”, joining 64 cartoons of politic humor about  Inacio Lula da Silva  administration , previously published in Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.

His friend Angeli says that the  liaght humor  of Galcuyo in hard times of dictatorship , make him the ” Rita Lee  of cartoonism” ( Rita Lee  was a popular singer making happy  songs  in hard times) .

Glauco  was a very fine cartoonist and also a very kind man who will be missed very much .

His  works  can be  seen  at :: http://www2.uol.com.br/glauco/publicacoes.shtml
