2nd International Car Caricature Exhibition in Zagreb 2008 - Croatia

Coming to Croatia in 2008 a unique and original international cultural event the 2 Zagreb Car
Caricature Exhibition.
This year marks the 110 anniversary of the car's FIRST APPEARANCE in Croatia, a Benz model driven by Count Marko Bombelles, first president of the Croatia automobile Club (HAK), to his home in Vinica, near Varazdin. Zagreb, the capital, had to wait until 1901, when Prince Ferdinand Budicki (first secretary of HAK) drove a car to the city from Vienna, almost causing riots in the streets !
Since those early days the car, in all its guises, has become an essential part of everyday life. “His Majesty”, the car has become so necessary for work and play that it is difficult to imagine any activity which does not involve the use of an automobile; from basic functions such as travelling to and from work, to every type of economic, sport, cultural, political, recreational, tourist, health, military, police and “romantic” pursuit. It is omnipresent, ever desirable and IRREPLACEABLE ! Life without a car is unimaginable, which is why we have given this beloved vehicle a principal and permanent role in our caricature exhibition which, this year, has the theme: OUR EVERYDAY CAR PARKING.
The main sponsors for this year are the City of Zagreb and Zagreb Holdings, who are presenting the Grand Prize, and the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) Zagreb Branch, who are awarding the FirstPrize. The other sponsors will be revealed on the opening day 28/05/2008 in the lobby of the Autobusni kolodvor (Main Bus Station), Zagreb - a location specially chosen to appeal to both caricature fans and the thousands of travellers and visitors to Croatia's capital city.
This exhibition provides Zagreb, and Croatia, with an annual cultural and artistic show which is rapidly attracting an international following - with a theme instantly recognisable by all cars in our daily work and life.
Please despatch caricatures and application forms (see attachment) to the following address to arrive by 21 April 2008:
Huna d.o.o
Srebrnjak 55
10000 Zagreb

We very much look forward to receiving your entry and to meeting you at the exhibition. Many thanks for your participation and here's hoping your caricature will be selected for the exhibition and the catalogue!

Big Boat of Humour - contest / Lodz - Poland

The Big Boat of Humour - contest / Lodz - Poland
In Polish, the word ŁÓDŹ means a vehicle propelled by sails, oars or engine, used as a means of water transport. Almost all around the world, it carries symbolic connotations:
- it is an allegory of human fate in both individual and collective dimension,
- it is associated with courage, when imagining sailors embarking on a voyage across rough oceans,
- it symbolizes human longing for adventure and some change in life.
Łódź is also the name of the second largest city in Poland which is an inland city with no access to navigable waters. We hope that the name of our metropolis will become an inspiration for graphic artists, especially those with a flair for satire. The theme should be taken up with humour, with panache and perhaps with a bit of poetry…
This explanation, indispensable to foreigners, is also aimed at the Poles, for whom the popular usage of the name of the city might have blurred the sharpness of its paradox.
For the third time, "The Big Boat Of Humour" would like to invite all cartoonists to plunge into the boat theme. The boat out of which we hook again for witty ideas, funny punch lines and all this ideas useful for Łódź citizens, to net the best life chances.
Ladies and Gentlemen, set off for the big sailing.
Top above: Frackiewicz (Grand Prix 2007)

REGULATIONS
1. The aim of the contest is:

3. The theme of the third edition of The BIG BOAT of HUMOUR contest is: “Boat fishing”
- capturing the paradoxical relationship between the name of our city and its inland location away from navigable waters, enriched with an interpretation of voyage, exploration and pioneering motif, characteristic of sailors.

"Human Rights"
Theme PortoCartoon 2008

The Portuguese Printing Press Museum internationally launch the theme of the X PortoCartoon-World Festival "Human Rights", on the same day that the heads of state of 27 countries of the European Union sign the new Treaty of Lisbon and approve the charter of fundamental rights of the European citizens.
With the choice of this theme, the organizer of PortoCartoon wants the cartoonists worldwide to focus on the continued violation of human rights in the 21st century, and after more than two centuries of French Revolution (1789).
According to the general rules of this contest “this is a subject that crosses the world, from the most assumed countries in matters of the rights legislation to the most retrograde in the law and its practise... The theme is even justified by the fact that every day there are individual, collective, social, economic and cultural rights in question.
As one of the most important rights is the freedom of press, it is also fair and opportune with this 10th PortoCartoon to evoke and pay tribute to John Milton, the author of the first speech on this topic. The poet of the “Paradise Lost” was born 400 years ago (1608) and his speech, named Areopagitica was made in the English parliament in 1644.
The active intervention of the cartoonists all over the world is very relevant on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights.
For those who eventually do not wish to participate under this theme, there will be a Free Category. The international politics, the social life, the communication and other themes can always be a way of expressing the humour art.
The winners of PortoCartoon will receive a monetary prize, the trophy of the festival, designed by Arqto Siza Vieira and special bottles of Port wine.
G. Wolinski presides to the international jury that has the following members: the President of FECO (Federation of Cartoonists’ Organizations), Marlene Pohle; representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto, the Portuguese Printing Press Museum and any representatives of other institutions related to the cartoon.
The X PortoCartoon-World Festival has the official sponsorship of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos and will be inaugurated during the festivities of the city of Porto in June.
The PortoCartoon has been a space of excellence for humour worldwide and is considered by FECO (Federation of Cartoonists’ Organizations) as one of the three most important cartoon contests in the world, either for the participation number of artists worldwide and also for the value of its prizes.
The PortoCartoon began in 1999, and its exhibition receives every year thousands of visitors, both on the Portuguese Printing Press Museum installations and on the several cities and countries where is presented.
The works to the X PortoCartoon should arrive at the Portuguese Printing Press Museum (E.N. 108, nº 206, 4300-316 Porto, Portugal) with the entry form until 31 March 2008.

We have to believe that it is still possible to save our only homeland, our world and have to try doing that.
We are calling all cartoonists in the world to produce dramatic pieces for our sensibility in this subject.
In our contest, we hope to see the proficiency of new cartoonists and innovations of masters.

8th Biennale “Humour & Vigne” 2008 JONZAC - France
What is the meaning of « Humour & Vigne »
To what does « Vigne » refer ?
« Humour & Vigne » is the name of the biennial festival and its organising association. In choosing the word « vigne » (both vine and vineyard) rather than « vin » (wine) the organisers offer artists a broader spectrum of choice which could include, for example : the plant, the stock, the leaves, the grapes, the grape juice and of course the wine ! Numerous other products such as Cognac, Pineau des Charentes, Champagne etc… without forgetting the vineyard and the men who cultivate and plant the vines on their own very particular soil. Again the cellars, the distillery, the barrels, the bottles and the glasses for the joy of tasting. In short, we could decline over several pages the list of concepts that cover the word « vigne ».
Cartoons and the vine both facilitate an exchange which goes beyond the barriers of language adding to the pleasure and well being of all peoples.
What is the biennial festival ?
Since 1994, held every two years in the summer, the festival of Jonzac has gained international renown. The programme includes exhibitions, spectacles, and humorous entertainements. The festival welcomes artists and supports regional and international links. The event gives the opportunity to publish a catalogue, a poster and humorous wine labels. Every festival keeps a general theme of « Humour & Vigne » and every time proposes a unique subject : Cognac en 1996, Earth and Sea in 1998, Millennium Merriment in 2000, the Kitchen in 2002, Art in 2004, Sport in 2006 and Love in 2008 (Guest of honour will be Bridenne)
Who is concerned ?
In 2006, 275 cartoonists (numbering amongst them some famous names and many members of FECO) from over forty countries, submitted about 700 artworks half of which were selected for inclusion in the exhibition. About 20 cartoonists, a dozen of performance artists, thirty or more organising volunteers and sixty supporters and sponsors were present. All the above contributed to the success of the event, as did the 35.000 (approx) visitors who attended the exhibition in Jonzac and others towns in France.
Where and when is it ?
In Jonzac town of water and of Pineau situated between Cognac and Bordeaux. From 21th June to 15th July 2008. Inauguration and celebration Saturday 28th June 2008.
In brief
« Humour & Vigne » has no other ambition than to unite the talents of cartoonists worldwide around a theme generous in its interpretation A small festival in a small town with a small budget but a high investment from volunteers creating bonhomie between the invited artists participants and organisers.
